Shocking Near-Miss as Pilot Cuts in Front of Airline Jet in Rochester

A recent communication exchange within Rochester’s air traffic control recorded a nail-biting moment that could have led to a close call for two aircraft. The event unfolded as an unnamed pilot seemed to make a bold move, cutting in front of another airline aircraft during takeoff.

The audio begins with the chatter of various planes checking in and receiving instructions from the tower. Suddenly, a pilot can be heard, “I’m sorry onvo 462 cancel landing clearance.” It seems like there was some confusion about their approach as the tower replies, “Maintain 2,500 or above.”

At one point, another aircraft, 43 Quebec, is urged to extend their downwind leg, keeping distance from what’s shaping up to be a busy airspace. “You can proceed inbound,” says the controller, directing the pilots to maintain their altitudes and prepare for landing. But confusion rises as Air Traffic Control calls out, “46, you still Rochester in sight just off your left wing,” suggesting that the approaching aircraft was perilously close to another.

The intensity heats up as the controller swiftly redirects the on-going aircraft, saying, “We’re going to have to go around,” to ensure everything stays orderly. You can almost feel the relief when the tower gives the next instruction to “maintain 3,000,” a critical altitude to ensure safety.

As exchanges continue, the atmosphere remains tense yet under control, with pilots confirming instructions like “clear for the visual approach Runway 31.” The coordination among the crew is commendable, as they navigate the heavy traffic while maintaining clarity on their whereabouts.

Finally, the moment of tension wraps up but not before a pilot is reminded, “Contact the tower when you’re ready to copy.”
