The Mega-Cruise Ship Revolution at the Port of Los Angeles

But the tides are changing (pun intended) as the trend leans heavily towards colossal vessels like Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, which, let’s be honest, is a floating city with maximum capacity for a staggering 7,600 guests.

Adapting to these titanic ships isn’t just a matter of throwing more money at the problem. It’s a comprehensive makeover that involves infrastructure and logistics on a grand scale. The port’s ambitious plan includes redeveloping the existing World Cruise Center, upgrading its current berths, terminals, and baggage handling facilities to accommodate these monstrous vessels. Port officials have even issued a call for proposals to seek vendors capable of transforming this vision into reality by November 2024. This is no small feat, considering the complexities involved in maritime engineering and the sheer size of these mega-ships.

Part of this grand plan involves building a new Outer Harbor Cruise Terminal, which will offer additional berths (from 46 to 50) and access to 20 acres of land that could be developed into a behemoth parking structure with over 2,000 spaces. Ain’t that a dream for any traveler wanting hassle-free parking?

“Over the past 20 years, our Port has invested over $1 billion in enhancing, operating, and programming LA Waterfront infrastructure,” said Mike Galvin, the Port’s Director of Waterfront and Commercial Real Estate Development. He continued, “These two proposed cruise terminal projects represent the next stage of that investment and the continued transformation of the waterfront into a dynamic and multi-use visitor destination.”

Here’s the rub, though: when will the blueprint transform into steel and concrete? The timeline remains unclear. Yet, one thing is abundantly certain—the mega-ship movement is an evolving reality, and Los Angeles doesn’t intend to be left behind.

High Tide of Cruise Demand in Los Angeles

If you’ve been anywhere near Los Angeles in the past couple of years, you’ve surely noticed the growing frenzy around cruises. The Port of Los Angeles, just 20 miles south of downtown LA, has emerged as the more popular choice compared to its close neighbor, the Port of Long Beach. The number of cruise ships that’ve docked here in the past two years alone is astonishing—over 200 ships. Each one contributes a hefty chunk to the local economy, with every vessel dropping more than $1 million into the local coffers.

Port Executive Director Gene Seroka highlighted this burgeoning demand: “We have seen increased demand for cruises out of the LA Waterfront over the last several years, with a record 1.3 million cruise passengers in 2023.” Seriously, 1.3 million passengers! That’s a lot of sunhats and flip-flops wandering through the port.

So why San Pedro, you might ask? Of the two major LA ports, San Pedro is arguably the go-to for most travelers, and here’s why. The World Cruise Center doesn’t just limit its voyages to the Mexican Riviera. Sure, that’s a breathtaking route, but the offerings don’t stop there. You can embark on voyages to the Pacific Coast, the South Pacific, Alaska, the Panama Canal, and Europe, all from San Pedro. It’s like having a world map of destinations waiting right at your doorstep.

Meanwhile, the Port of Long Beach primarily caters to Carnival Cruise Line and, on sparsely occasional days, ships from Carnival’s sister brands. Don’t get me wrong, Carnival’s voyages are phenomenal, but the variety that San Pedro offers is much broader. This is even more enticing when you consider the heavyweights of the cruise industry that sail from San Pedro—Celebrity Cruises, Costa Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Cunard Line, Disney Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Viking Cruises, and Royal Caribbean all have routes starting from here. It’s no wonder more and more travelers are flocking to this port.

The cruise industry’s awe-inspiring market demands are not just a flash in the pan. The coastlines of California are teeming with passengers eager to explore exotic landscapes and countless world-class destinations. While other ports might specialize or focus on single-destination cruises, the diversity offered by the World Cruise Center in San Pedro provides an enticing variety for any seasoned or first-time cruiser.

A significant portion of this enthusiasm for cruising can be attributed to the vibrancy and allure of the vessels themselves. Modern cruise ships are more akin to leisure resorts than mere modes of transportation. While we might love the idea of hopping on mega-cruise ships, the real fun lies in the prospect of how these floating paradises will revolutionize our cruising experiences.
